Dewayne McClary

Dewayne McClary is Deputy State Superintendent for Innovation, Student Pathways & Opportunities at the Virginia Department of Education.

He grew up in Kingstree, a small town in rural South Carolina, and started out as a long-term substitute before teaching social studies at the same middle school he had attended. From there he moved to Arlington Public Schools, spent five years as Director of Educational Technology and Library Programs at DC Public Schools, then ran Digital Promise’s League of Innovative Schools.

His mother, an educator of 38 years, taught him that if you don’t tell your own story, someone else will tell it for you, a lesson he carries into his work building trust between Virginia’s divisions and the communities they serve. He is the father of three, including two children in Virginia public schools.
